THE STORY

Every fabric carries a story. Every story carries an identity.

Threads of Identity explores the powerful relationship between African fabrics, textiles, fashion and the identities of the people who wear them.

Across Africa, fabrics have long carried meanings that reach far beyond clothing. Colours, patterns, weaving traditions and styles can speak to heritage, community, celebration, memory and belonging.

Threads of Identity creates a platform to explore those meanings and to consider what African fashion represents for people living in the diaspora — particularly Africans and people of African heritage living in the UK.

The project invites people to look beyond the fabric itself and discover the memories, traditions, creativity and personal stories woven into it.

MORE THAN FASHION

Fashion can be an expression. Culture can be a conversation.

Threads of Identity is not simply a fashion showcase. It uses fashion and textiles as a doorway into deeper conversations about culture, heritage and identity.

A piece of fabric can become a conversation about where someone comes from, what they remember, what they value and how they see themselves.

By placing African fabrics and creative expression at the centre of the project, Threads of Identity encourages audiences to see fashion as something capable of communicating history, belonging and personal expression.

For many Africans living in the diaspora, cultural identity is both deeply personal and collectively shared.

Living away from the continent can change the way people experience culture. Yet clothing, textiles, food, language, music and traditions can provide powerful ways of maintaining a connection with heritage.

Threads of Identity creates a space where those connections can be celebrated in the UK — bringing different African experiences together without reducing Africa to a single culture or story.
